Havyakas belong to Karnataka and North Kerala, and are Hindu Pancha Dravida Brahmins. Havyakas are followers of Advaita philosophy, which is preached by Adi Shankaracharya. People of Havyaka community are intellectuals and hold good positions in the administration and government of India. Alike other Brahmin communities in India, Havyakas are also very orthodox and are very strict about Havyaka matrimony in same caste marriage. However, marriage in same gotra in Havyaka matrimony is not allowed.
