The word 'Mali' is derived from the Sanskrit word mala meaning garland. The community is mostly Hindus and are earlier engaged in the gardening and related activities. There are many sub-groups within the Mali community and alliances are generally fixed within the community. The Mali Brides follow the wedding rituals that vary from state to state. Most of the community members are settled in north and eastern part of India. The Terai region of Nepal also has concentration of this community
