Bhandari is a Rajput caste of the sea faring warriors of ancient India. They are mainly settled in Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan, Gujarat and Uttarakhand. The sub communities of Bhandaris are Kitte, Kshatriya, Hetkari, Thale, Devkar, Chaudhary, Shinde and Morey. It is believed that Bhandari comes from a Sanskrit word ‚Bhanda‚„ that means ‚big ships‚„ and those who engineered these ships were referred to as Bhandaris. They may follow Hinduism, Sikhism, Jainism or Islam.
