Mogaveera, the major fishing community, forms one of the largest Tulu communities in coastal Karnataka. Mogaveeras are known by different names such as Marakalas, Bovis, Mogeyar, etc. and speak various languages like Kannada, Konkani and Tulu. They usually are in professions related to fishermen, boatmen, palanquin bearers, porters, oil pressing, agriculture, etc. Sapaliga, Ganiga and Bovi are the three main sub communities of Mogaveeras that are classified on the basis of their occupations.
