The title of Mudaliar is used by various Tamil castes both in India and abroad. It comes from the word ‚Mudali‚„ in Tamil which was used for persons of first rank, usually bureaucratic and army officers. Mudaliar then typically means first ones or even first citizens. Mudali clans or Thondaimandalam are divided into 24 Kottams and many of them have migrated to countries like Sri Lanka, Singapore and Malaysia.
