Swarnkar is primarily a Hindu caste but there are many Sikh Swarnkars as well. This term literally means ‚goldsmiths‚„. The people of this community are also known as Sunar or Sonar and have originated from north India. Swarnkars are divided into numerous groupings, both territorial and non territorial. Swarnakrs are traditionally goldsmiths but some of them are today the landowners, cultivators, moneylenders, etc. Mairs and Tanks are the two primary tribes of goldsmiths in the present times.
