Vellalar, the Tamil aristocratic caste of agricultural landlords, is divided into various sub castes. Some of the titles used by Vellalars are Gounder, Mudaliar, Pillai and various others. The word ‚Vellalar‚„ has various derivations, so it may mean ‚Lord of the floods‚„ or ‚People of Vel‚„ according to different theories. Tamil and Malayalam are the main languages spoken by Vellalars in India as well as Sri Lanka.
