Khandayat, the single largest caste in Orissa constituting over 35% of the state's population is highest in the caste system. Traditionally, they are a martial caste and even the name Khandayat is originated from Oriya terms khanda (sword) and ayat (control) literally meaning 'complete control over sword'. They believe in simple living that clearly reflects from the way their marriages are performed. Wedding celebrations in Oriya Hindu Khandayats are not showy unlike other Indian marriages.
