Tamil people or Tamilians are a linguistic and ethnic group native to Tamil Nadu in southern India and the north-eastern region of Sri Lanka. Tamil Hindus speak Tamil with a recorded history going back two millennia.
Tamils are mostly Hindus with almost 88% of the population of Tamil Nadu comprising Hindus along with sizable Christian and Muslim populations that account for 5.5% and 6% respectively. The famous Nataraja sculpture of the Chola period is a universal symbol of Hinduism for Tamils.
