The meaning of Nadar means one who rules the land. Nadar is a prominent caste of Tamil Nadu constituting 12% of the total population in the region. In the ancient times they were Aristocrats and Landlords of the old Shanar community. Today, Hindu Nadar's have become an enterprising community engaged in various businesses and are politically active. There are five divisions among Nadars and those are Karukkupattaiyathar, Mel-Nattar, Nattathi, Kodikal and Kalla. Nadars live in joint families.
