The term Hindu in origin is a Persian word referring to any tradition that is native to India as opposed to Islam. Hindu is used in the sense of "Indian pagan" in English from the 17th century.
Hindus make up approximately 82% of Delhi's population and the rest include Muslims, Sikhs, Jains, Christians, Parsis and others. Hindus in Delhi usually speak Hindi as main and English as official language. Majority of them follow Hinduism while others may belong to Sikh, Jain or Buddhist communities.
