Khandayat is the largest caste in Orissa as it accounts for nearly 50% population of the state. Khandayat comes from Oriya words- ‚Khanda‚„ and ‚ayat‚„ meaning ‚a person with complete control over his sword‚„. They are considered to be the original off springs of Kshatriyas and are thus warriors traditionally. Although Khandayat is a martial caste, they have seen remarkable growth in various fields related to education. Some of the titles used by its members are Bal, Pradhan, Bhola, Sahoo, etc.
