Maithil's were the natives of Mithila region that spoke Maithili language and today live in north Bihar. Maithil also refers to a branch of Brahmins which is a part of Hindu Varna system. Besides Bihar, a large number of Maithils lives in Nepal as well. The people of Maithil have an ancient history and their language Maithili is one of the oldest language in India from which present languages such as Bengali has evolved. The common surnames used by Maithils are Mishra, Jha, Choudhary etc.
