Buddhist influences are apparent in the culture of Nepal because Buddha was born in Nepal. It has strong Buddhist background and has played an important role in spread of Buddhism.
Ethnic groups in central Nepal, such as Gurung, Lepcha, Tamang, Magar, Newar, Yakkha, Thami, Chantyal and Chepang are also followers of Buddhism and thus, Nepali Buddhists. They have larger populations than their northern neighbors. Nepali Buddhists came under the influence of Hinduism in early ages adopting it later.
